Evaluation, Team Selection & Coach Selection Policy

Evaluation, Team Selection & Coach Selection Policy

In age divisions where numbers warrant two Redcliff Grizzlies teams, (following both registration and any applicable player movement requests or needs) the following process will be in place for evaluations and team selection:

Players will be evaluated on a 4-point system, and half points WILL NOT be awarded in evaluation, with average scores of all combined assessments accumulated (Score of “4” is excellent, meaning the skill is in the top 25% of the group, a score of “3” is Above Average or top half of the group, a score of “2” is below average, while an evaluation score of “1” is in the bottom 25% of the group.

When possible, evaluators should be a combination of independent evaluators and those interested in coaching/helping coach. At no time should an evaluator give an evaluation for their own child.

HEAD COACH SELECTION & TEAM SELECTION

Head coaches will be selected in a collaboration between the applicable division director, president and vice president based on both the coach’s child evaluation score/ability to play at that applicable level, but also then based on the qualifications and experience of the coach submitting to head coach.

Assistant coaches will then be selected by the head coach (a list of interested coaches/helpers will be provided to the head coach), but just like the head coach, other coach’s child(ren) must appropriately evaluate within the eligible range for selection. A final review and approval of the coaching staff should/will be approved by the division director, president and vice president (so long as there is not a situation of conflict-of-interest with the head coach position, such as a board member wishing to head coach; then they must abstain from being involved in the head coach selection process).

TEAM SELECTION PROCESS

Through the evaluation process, the top 2/3 of the Grizzlies Blue roster (ex. 10/15 skaters, and 1 of 2 goaltenders) should be locked into spots on the top team, while the bottom 1/3 of the roster will be selected by the coaches through “coaches picks.”

PLEASE NOTE, the coach’s picks ARE NOT a wide-open format where the coach can select any players for these spots… the remaining roster must be selected from the top half of the remaining players eligible for selection (for example, after the top 10 are evaluated, the remaining 5 skaters for the Grizzlies Blue roster must be chosen from the next best 10 of the remaining 20 skaters, hence not permitting a selection from outside of the evaluated abilities of the players). For goaltenders, after the top goaltender is evaluated, the second goaltender must be one of the next two evaluated, not the 4th for example. The remaining players not selected will be placed on the Grizzlies White roster with a head coach selected from submissions received and reviewed of qualification by the division director, president & vice president.
